THE ROLE OF THE CATHOLIC LAITY
By Virtue of Canon 204, the laity are members of Christ’s faithful and as such share in the priestly kingly and prophetic office of Christ.
The Vatican II in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium describes the Laity as members of Christ’s faithful whose vocation is to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to the divine plan of God.
The indispensability of the laity in the Church’s evangelization has informed the increasing call on the laity by the Fathers of the church to be co-responsible for the mission of the Church.
In order to fulfill her mission of the renewal of the temporal order, there is need to bring the various lay groups under the umbrella of the Laity Council so that through collective action, dialogue and reflection on Church’s social principles, insights might be formulated and ideas widely diffused to leaven the society.
